Proofreading: $2 per page

This service is for manuscripts that are highly polished and require only a final check by an expert pair of eyes. As the final step in the editing process, proofreading is generally reserved exclusively for manuscripts that have previously been professionally edited by Red Pen for Rent. We will carefully examine your text from a technical standpoint only, checking for typographical errors as well as errors in spelling, grammar, and usage. For non-fiction works, we can read against any style guide at your request. We will additionally produce a style sheet for your manuscript.

Proofreading historically referred to the act of making technical corrections to a facsimile of the finished product (a "proof"). It is still often performed in hard copy, though we usually do an electronic markup using Microsoft Word's tracked changes feature. At your request (and for an extra fee of $100), we can print out your manuscript and read it in hard copy before transferring edits to the electronic document. We offer this option because we first learned to read on paper, and studies have shown that we catch the most errors when reading in that format.
